Reviews
Reception of Under the Window surprised everyone, except perhaps Kate’s father who had believed in her from her youngest days. According to S.R. Danger, Under the Window has enjoyed well over a century of positive reception, as “Her contemporaries and twentieth- century critics alike have celebrated Under the Window’s perpetuation of Romantic iconography as well as its expert reproduction and Aesthetic designs” (Danger, 2009, p. 314). Her most famous reviewer was of course her friend John Ruskin, who considered her work a “pastoral fairyland” (Ruskin, n.d., p. 65) and praised her for creating something that was “decent, orderly, beautiful, and pure” (Ruskin, n.d., p. 62). A review in Spectator, applauds one scene in the book as a “better land” that captures children’s psychology (Danger, 2009, p. 314). Her work was praised by a number of other reviewers as “aesthetically pleasing”, “highly desirable” and “sure to be accepted by all” (Danger, 2009, p. 315)
